    Chancellor Angela Merkel with Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

    From 19 till 21 July, Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are visiting Germany. On the first day of their visit, Prince William and Catherine met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel. Their itinerary also included a tour of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and visiting a project that aides street children.

    A 35,000 year old carving of a mammoth made from ivory discovered in the Swabian Jura

    Six caves in which the oldest depiction of a human, as well as countless other figurines and musical instruments dating from the Ice Age were discovered have been inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This brings the total of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany to 42.

    Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Berlin

    Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Chinese President Xi in Berlin last week. Germany and China aim to deepen relations in numerous areas, Merkel and Xi emphasised following their meeting at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. Among the topics discussed was the upcoming G20 summit. A further highlight was a visit to the Berlin Zoo, where Merkel and Xi opened a new enclosure for the zoo's youngest arrivals: a Chinese panda pair, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing.

She said that we would find the correct answers to the central questions of our time only if we worked together. She emphasised that this was valid for both the EU and the G20, as the great challenges would not stop at national borders.

  • 28 June 2017 | German Embassy London, Federal Government | Chancellor of Unity to be remembered at European Ceremony of Honour

    For the first time in the history of the European Union, a European Ceremony of Honour is to be held for an oustanding European personality: on 1 July in the European Parliament in Strasbourg will pay tribute to former Chancellor Helmut Kohl. This will be followed in Germany by a funeral procession, a pontifical requiem mass in Speyer Cathedral and a military tribute. Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl has died at the age of 87 on 16 June.
