Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Berlin

Deepening Chinese-German relations

Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Chinese President Xi in Berlin last week. Germany and China aim to deepen relations in numerous areas, Merkel and Xi emphasised following their meeting at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. Among the topics discussed was the upcoming G20 summit. A further highlight was a visit to the Berlin Zoo, where Merkel and Xi opened a new enclosure for the zoo's youngest arrivals: a Chinese panda pair, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing.

Chancellor Merkel thanked President Xi for his input on the upcoming summit, especially as China played host to the last G20 meeting a year ago, where Germany and China worked closely together.

In her statement Merkel said that the two countries could look back at 45 years of successful diplomatic relations. It was not only a strategic partnership, but an extensive strategic partnership, which meant that all areas of society were part of the cooperation, Merkel pointed out.

The close and manifold economic ties between both countries were very important, and had reached a very broad scale. Numerous contracts and declarations of intent had been signed in the presence of both leaders. Germany wants to be treated equally on business matters and granted market access, as that was very important for German companies," Merkel said.

Cyber security and combating international terrorism were also areas where Germany and China had intensified cooperation.

A further agenda highlight was a visit to the Berlin Zoo, where Merkel and Xi opened a new enclosure for the zoo's youngest arrivals: a Chinese panda pair, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing. As a loan from China the pandas will spend 15 years at the Berlin Zoo.
