A 35,000 year old carving of a mammoth made from ivory discovered in the Swabian Jura

Six caves in which the oldest depiction of a human, as well as countless other figurines and musical instruments dating from the Ice Age were discovered have been inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This brings the total of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany to 42.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Chinese President Xi in Berlin last week. Germany and China aim to deepen relations in numerous areas, Merkel and Xi emphasised following their meeting at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. Among the topics discussed was the upcoming G20 summit. A further highlight was a visit to the Berlin Zoo, where Merkel and Xi opened a new enclosure for the zoo's youngest arrivals: a Chinese panda pair, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing.

Chancellor of Unity to be remembered at European Ceremony of Honour

For the first time in the history of the European Union, a European Ceremony of Honour is to be held for an oustanding European personality: on 1 July in the European Parliament in Strasbourg will pay tribute to former Chancellor Helmut Kohl. This will be followed in Germany by a funeral procession, a pontifical requiem mass in Speyer Cathedral and a military tribute. Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl has died at the age of 87 on 16 June.

Deadline for applications for one-time payment to former Soviet prisoners of war to expire 30 September 2017

The German Parliament decided on 21 May 2015 that former Soviet prisoners of war should receive a symbolic payment in recognition of their treatment in German detention.The period of time in which to submit an application ends this year on 30 September 2017. This is an exclusionary deadline.
